If you like the mystery genre, you will enjoy this book by Heather Gudenkauf. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and she writes a great mystery. My next read will also be by this author.
When the unthinkable happens in rural Iowa, the ripple effect creates two more storylines. Each of these unfold throughout the storytelling of the first. The author is skillful in the insertion of the dual plots, and because each of them are captivating in themselves, this reader was riveted from start to finish. One of the best ways to gauge my personal enjoyment, is the number of times I think of the book when I’m not reading. I was always wanting to get back to reading on this one.
Author Heather Gudenkauf herself lives and creates her settings in Iowa, and her description of the gentle and fruitful farmland lie in direct contrast to the stark reality of crime. Regardless of your genre preferences, anyone would find this story captivating and intriguing. Part of writing mystery in my opinion is the underbelly of the mechanics. Knowing what the reader is thinking and assuming, then fleshing out those trains of thought with calculating precision. Yes, this is what great mysteries are made of. I put together my hunches about how the stories were connected, but hunches were all they were. If I can’t figure out the mystery until the exact time the author wants me to, that's entertainment at its best! I highly recommend this book. –Kim Luke
